ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

PEAT

POLICY AIM

As a major UK retailer of DIY and gardening products, FOCUS recognises the need to conserve Europe’s peatlands. Therefore, it is our aim to progressively reduce and eventually eliminate the use of peat.

POLICY STATEMENT

1. FOCUS does not buy or sell peat that has been extracted from designated conservation areas, such as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). All growing media products shall comply with the Growing Media Initiative’s Peat Sourcing Policy.

2. Suppliers of peat–containing products are required to provide details of their peat sources and after use programmes and these are subject to audit.

3. FOCUS does not sell peat other than as an ingredient in products. FOCUS own-brand soil improvers and mulch do not contain peat.

4. FOCUS offers own-brand peat-free alternatives at the same price point as the equivalent size of own-brand peat-based product.

5. FOCUS advertises the availability of peat-free products to customers in addition to the availability of peat-based products.

6. FOCUS supports the principle of a ‘full right to know’ and will, on request, seek to provide information to customers about specified products.

7. Environmental claims on FOCUS own-brand growing media conform to the UK Government’s official guidance document “Guidance on environmental claims on growing media”.

8. Suppliers of FOCUS own-brand growing media are required to reduce annually the percentage level of peat within these products without loss of product quality.

9. Suppliers of outdoor plants to FOCUS are required annually to review the growing media they use with the aim of reducing progressively the peat content without loss of product quality.

10. Suppliers are encouraged to use recycled materials, as alternatives to peat, in FOCUS products.

11. FOCUS is a member of the Growing Media Initiative and will aim to meet the UK Government’s target of 90% peat-free growing media by 2010, given that this can be achieved without loss of product quality or market share.

12. This policy will be reviewed and assessed annually.
